IMO, a bead is best used in "filtration system", not as a stand alone, all in one filter. One line of thought is also not to expect much if any bio out of a bead or Ultima. While many are happy with the Ultimas, I fell that the tubular media they use, will not provide the same level of fines filtraiton obtained from small poly beads. Can easily open the lid on a side valve mounted tank. This would be challenging on a top mounted valve tank, since the valve is the lid and would be connecting to lnlet/outlket plumbing. The only way to get a bead fully clean w/o a blower, would be to pop the lid off and manually stir the beads. Putting a blower on a cheaper bead would make up a highter percentage of the total cost than it would on higher end bead. Highter priced beads are going to be side mounted, fiberglass tanks. The bulk of these models are going to be cheaper top valve mounted, poly tanks. Manufacturers that sell beads w/o blowers.including Ultima, are being marketed to ponders looking for a more economic options. Even with a blower, I have to hit it a few times to get the beads to break up. W/o a blower, you'll never get the bead fully cleaned, you just think you are. The ammonia and nitrite never registered with the increased bio load, from the 2fish that were in the Q-tank as filter keepers. The filtration on my Q-tank is 2 of the small bead filters and this summer, I needed to separate about 10 or 12 smaller fish, about 12 inches each, so that some could be selected for a show. If I am medicating and want to take the filter off line by going to bypass, I first go to backwash position and turn the blower on to drain much of the water from the filter, allowing the media to have a tank of air, rather than the small amount of oxygen that is contained in the water.Īll bead filters need to have some form of solids separator in front of the filter, such as the vortex, or sieve. One of the other brands says they have that feature. I would not have another true bead filter without a blower.Īs for the Advantage having an aeration capability during bypass, I am not aware of it. Some believe that the biofilm can be damaged by too vigorous a backwash, but I allow the blower to run upwards of 10 minutes at times after I feel the filter shaking from the popping action of the beads inside. The bacterial biofilm forms on the outside of the beads and tends to glue the beads together, so vigorous backwashing is needed to separate the beads and allow the solids to escape. This traps solids in the bead pack that must be washed out. The beads float on top of the water with the water flowing up through them. I also have an Aquadyne 4.4B, the B designates it as a blower assisted backwash, and they sell both with and without blowers, and I have an Advantage 15 which comes standard with a blower.
The first bead filters were gravity drain air bubble washed filters and I have 3 of them, but I modified 2 of them to have forced water backwash, since I did not feel that the designed backwash was sufficient. The true bead filters use a solid somewhat spherical floating bead and are upflow filters.
Because the tubular media cannot pack as tight as the true bead, it is not as good at fines removal as the true bead filters.
It is a sinking media, so the filter is a downflow filter, like the swimming pool sand filters. The ultima uses a plastic tubular media that is said to have higher surface area. The so called bead filters come in two varieties, the true bead filter and the Ultima type.
